Raised in Pontefract in West Yorkshire, SCpl Holliday joined the Household Cavalry when he was 18 years old and has served in the Household Cavalry for his entire 18 years of service. He began in the Household Cavalry Regiment in D Squadron and was soon promoted to LCpl. During his time in the Household Cavalry he has been deployed to Kosovo in 1999 and Afghanistan in 2009, became a senior drill instructor, a small arms instructor and a map reading instructor before applying for a Trade role when a job became available as an apprentice tailor. He undertook his training from Windsor, working in the Tailor store and took 2 courses, Basic Tailor Training and Advanced Tailor Training. From 2008 until 2011 he was posted in the Tailor store in Windsor before being promoted to CoH in 2011 and moving to Hyde Park Barracks in Knightsbridge.
In 2013 he was promoted to Master Tailor and was further promoted to SCpl in 2014. The next promotion SCpl Holliday can achieve will be WO2 (Warrant Officer 2).
His role as Master Tailor involves overseeing his fellow comrades in the Tailor store and quality controlling all of the work that leaves the store. With the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment being the largest mounted ceremonial regiment in the world, his role as Master Tailor is a rather large responsibility.
When asked what problems he sees, he says “This place is like Kwik Fit, you have a queue forming and you never know what is going to come through the door so it could take minutes or it could take hours. One job I have to do as Master Tailor is the gold stitching across the nape and sleeve of an Officer’s Mess Dress when he is given Field Rank.”
